Gender, Justice, Nationhood: Envisioning First Peoples Studies
The First Peoples Studies program presents a public lecture with Martin Cannon, associate professor of social justice education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and member of the Oneida Nation of Six Nations at Grand River Territory. His research addresses the legal injustices related to Canada's Indian Act and the colonial politics of state recognition.
Cannon’s most recent work focuses on educational strategies centered on Indigenous-settler relationships rejuvenation and nation-to-nation political relationships, including reform-based, programmatic initiatives concerned with restitution and colonial reparations in Canada, post-Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Indian Residential Schools apology. His new book, Men, Masculinity and the Indian Act, will soon be released by the University of British Columbia Press.
